Write for your reader's level
The Flesch Reading Ease score rates text from 0 (very hard) to 100 (very easy). Most successful web content and commercial fiction aims for 60–70 — roughly an 8th-grade level — which feels effortless to a broad audience. Higher scores suit children's books; lower scores suit academic or technical writing.
How to improve readability
- Shorten sentences — aim for 15–20 words average
- Prefer short, common words over long ones
